A former OR football player was found dead on Friday after a single-vehicle auto accident near the Ducks' stadium. The man told officers he had been driving alone.
Hours earlier, around 2.31am, Leiato's friend Pedro Chavarin Jr. had been involved in single-vehicle rollover crash near the area where the body was discovered.
The woman discovered the body just before 7 a.m. Police believe the person was a passenger in the man's vehicle, though the department continues to investigate.
Leiato played for the University of Oregon Ducks for three seasons before he was dismissed in May
Though the investigation isn't over, police say the deceased person was likely a passenger in the vehicle and not a pedestrian who got hit. Police responded and found the body. The driver was taken to the hospital, where he was charged with DUII - driving under the influence of intoxicants.
The football program confirmed in May that Leiato had been dismissed from the program. "He will be remembered and missed by all who knew him". Leiato was a star of the spring game and was expected to compete for a starting OLB job prior to getting booted off the team in late May following his second arrest in four months. A January arrest on a misdemeanor trespassing charge was followed by separate theft, criminal trespassing and criminal charges in April. Leiato had 14 tackles in 2017.More news: China ‘ready to hit back’ at Donald Trump’s tariffs
