Whoa, what a possible bargain Golden State just got.
By reportedly getting former Pelicans centre DeMarcus Cousins to agree Monday to a one-year deal for a mere US$5.3 million, the insanely rich got obscenely richer. But the New Orleans Pelicans free agent also averaged 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds and 5.4 rebounds last season while shooting 3-pointers better than most guards.
There is the obvious risk that Cousins may not be the same player when he returns from his injury, but for one of the best Centres in the National Basketball Association it is certainly a risk worth taking. A 73-win team added arguably the greatest scorer in the National Basketball Association today.
"Keep in mind he had that Achilles injury right after the all-star break and, in the back of his mind, he wondered if it would affect him majorly in free agency, and it did", Spears said during an ESPN segment shortly after the reported Cousins news broke.More news: 5 reasons Paul George should sign
Together, those five players combined for 109 points per game past year. They had to know that would go over poorly with Cousins, who believed his track record justified a max-level contract - even coming off one of the most devastating injuries in sports. "If Cousins returns to form, the Warriors may have to adjust to Cousins' game, but they'll become even more dominant and versatile than they've been the past four seasons". Even if Cousins takes until, say, late February to recover from the torn Achilles tendon he suffered in January, he should be back to his forceful self by the playoffs, giving Golden State's starting lineup a quintet of all-stars with which to pursue its third straight championship. Less than two days into the free agency window, the answer is a resounding "yes". The move is a gamble for the Warriors as they'll pay Cousins with a league exception that they could use to address other positions of need with players who may actually play this season.
Golden State has an immensely talented roster.
Yet how much Cousins helps will depend on how well he adapts his game to fit in with the Warriors offense.
