Scott Pruitt quits as head of USA environment agency

Environmental Protection Agency head Scott Pruitt has resigned from his position, President Donald Trump said Thursday. President Trump announced Pruitt's resignation via Twitter.

Andrew Wheeler, the former deputy EPA administrator, is unlikely to shift the agency's course as he steps into his new role as acting chief. "We have made tremendous progress and the future of the EPA is very bright", Trump wrote.

"It is extremely hard for me to cease serving you in this role first because I count it as a blessing to be serving you in any capacity, but also because of the transformative work that is occurring", he wrote in his resignation letter obtained by Fox News.

In his resignation letter, Pruitt cited "the unrelenting attacks" that were taking a toll on him and his family.

Pruitt's resignation follows months during which the EPA administrator has been embroiled in one ethics controversy after the next. Pruitt, 50, and his office, which he led since 2017, had come under fire for extravagant spending habits, including on first-class travel, pay raises to top aides and a $43,000 soundproof booth. Mr. Pruitt joins the ranks of former Trump administration officials forced to resign in disgrace, raising questions about why Mr. Trump hired them in the first place. "But Mr. Pruitt's brazen abuse of his position for his own personal gain has been absolutely astounding, rivaled only by the silence of far too many in Congress and in the White House who allowed Mr. Pruitt's unethical, and at times, possibly illegal behavior to go unchecked", the DE senator said in a lengthy statement. Arriving in Washington, he worked relentlessly to dismantle Obama-era environmental regulations that aimed to reduce toxic pollution and planet-warming carbon emissions.

Pruitt is the subject of 14 separate federal probes into his alleged misconduct and misspending.

"My desire in service to you has always been to bless you as you make important decisions for the American people", he wrote. "I will do everything possible to see that the next EPA administrator actually believes in environmental protection". Thank you again Mr. President for the honor of serving you and I wish you Godspeed in all that you put your hand to.

"From moving to roll back strong fuel economy standards, to repealing the Clean Power Plan, to undermining chemical regulation, to suppressing climate science, to advocating for USA withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, Scott Pruitt made the EPA stand for Every Polluter's Ally", he said in a statement.
