WFU Assistant Basketball Coach Accused of Punching, Killing NYC Tourist


Jones was arrested and charged with third-degree assault, according to the police report.

According to police, Jones allegedly punched Sandor Szabo in the face following a confrontation in the early morning hours Sunday that began when Szabo knocked on Jones' vehicle window thinking it was his Uber ride.

Szabo, of Boca Raton, was hospitalized in critical condition and died two days later, according to his employer in Florida. Jones, said to have been parked in an SUV that Szabo knocked on, got out and punched him, after which Szabo was taken to a hospital, only to die of his injuries on Tuesday.

Szabo then punched the person in the face, the New York Post reports.

Jones coached at FGCU from 2013-2015.

Jones was with his family after the court session, his attorney, Alain Massena, told the AP. The blow was so hard, Szabo fell backwards, hitting his head on the concrete. His family says he was visiting NY from Boca Raton, Florida, for a wedding. His family has said he was looking for his ride. He began moving through the college ranks in 2013 at Florida Gulf Coast, before stints at VCU and Central Florida.

He is entering his second season on the staff at Wake Forest.

He's said to be "a rising college basketball coaching star" at Wake Forest University. One of its assistants has reportedly been charged in an attack on a NY tourist who later died. "Sandor was super outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman".

"He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring", the post read.

"His attractive spirit and his love of life will remain with us", the company said in the Facebook post.
