McCain to be buried near best friend at US Naval Academy

The 81-year-old McCain died on Saturday of brain cancer at his Arizona ranch.

Congressman Bob Goodlatte added that the U.S.is "mourning the loss of a national hero".

He went on to become a high-profile senator and recently a critic of current US President Donald Trump.

It was the start of what promises to be a hard week for Trump. The president, who as a candidate in 2016 mocked McCain's capture in Vietnam, had jabbed at the ailing senator for voting against Republican efforts to roll back President Barack Obama's health care law.

Democrats are proposing one of the Senate office buildings in Washington be renamed in John McCain's honour.

Reportedly, Vice President Mike Pence will attend the Saturday service instead of President Trump.

Preparations are underway at the State Capitol where late Senator John McCain will lie in state this week, the beginning of a multi-day, multi-state good bye for the Maverick.

Sanders, who tweeted Sunday that McCain was a "great American" declined to comment on the Washington Post report Sunday. The statement stands in stark contrast with the tributes offered by former presidents, congressional colleagues of McCain's, and world leaders, who used glowing language to mark McCain's death and note his distinguished military and political career.

And McCain's survival through years of almost fatal torture and hardship in the Hanoi prison known as the "Hanoi Hilton" was made more impressive by his refusal to be repatriated before the release of all the American POWs captured before him. The senator also wrote about his long-standing feud with Trump in his memoir The Restless Wave saying that Trump's behaviour was disturbing. He understood the greatness of America, fought tirelessly for our values and put forth decades of admirable service to this nation.
