Cristiano Ronaldo could claim record sixth player of the year award

For the past nine years, these two superstars have dominated the game of football with Ronaldo and Messi winning five Ballon d'Or each.

Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was left off the shortlist for FIFA's Player of the Year award for the first time in 12 years on Monday while Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah were named as the three finalists.

A five-time victor of the award, Messi has also finished second in the voting for each of Ronaldo's five previous wins in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

If Ronaldo wins on 24 September, it will his sixth Federation Internationale de Football Association award.

World Cup winning tactician Didier Deschamps has been nominated alongside Croatia's Zlatko Dalic and former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane for the coach of the year award.

"Real Madrid are one of the best teams in the world with a great squad (but) it's evident that the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo makes them less good and makes Juventus (one of the) clear favourites to win the Champions League", he said.

Netherlands's tactician Sarina Wiegman both in contention for the Best FIFA Women's Coach, along with Lyon's Reynald Pedros and Japan's Asako Takakura, the latter having guided her side to the AFC Women's Asian Cup.

Barca last won the Champions League in 2014-15 and have failed to get beyond the quarter-finals since.

Zidane's last game in charge of Real was beating Liverpool in the Champions League at the end of last season.

The best goalkeeper prize is to be contested by Tottenham and France's Hugo Lloris, Denmark and Leicester's Kasper Schmeichel and Belgium and Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, formerly of Chelsea.
