Chris Sale's Game 5 availability still up in the air

Betts, the presumptive American League most valuable player award victor, had gone cold during the opening round of the playoffs.

Eovaldi made his postseason debut in Game 3 of this year's ALDS against the New York Yankees, yielding five hits and one run in seven innings of the 16-1 victory. He weakly rolled a ground ball to third base, leading to a force-out at the plate in an eventual Red Sox loss.

"That's the first question I've ever had in my career that had the word "trolling" in it", Hinch told reporters.

"He's a threat to do a lot of different things", he said. We're in a great time to be a baseball fan.

Betts exploded hours later.

Because the Sox aren't sure how strong Sale will be feeling, they can't say for sure if he'll make his next scheduled start in Game 5 on Thursday.

"Everything's fine", Manager Alex Cora said before the Red Sox held a brief workout Monday night. "Mookie hits a double, (Benintendi) hits a single and there were some good swings early in the count". Betts contributed, in part, to their elation. Ryan Brasier pitched a scoreless inning and erstwhile starter Rick Porcello set the Astros down 1-2-3 in the eighth. Betts added an RBI double in the eighth off Hector Rondon.

The Red Sox have new life in the ALCS.

"I came here to win a World Series and to do it multiple times.", said Price. "And there's no sense in stopping (now)". "We'll see how he feels physically, then after that we'll decide what we're going to do".

Keuchel plays for an Astros team that has the best of both pitching worlds.

"I'll be ready for Tuesday", said Price following Game 2 on Saturday, referred to his potential availability as a reliever in Game 3.

The AL West champs tied it in the second on George Springer's two-run double down the right-field line.

Down 4-2, the Sox still gave Price one last chance for a shutdown inning. Only Cole factored into the decision; he took the loss after retiring the final 10 batters he faced to cap his six-inning performance. If Sale can't go, Price may be asked to pick up the slack and start Game 5 on short rest. Price was given one more shot to complete the fifth but was pulled after walking Tyler White on four pitches. Manager Alex Cora relieved Price after he issued two walks in the fifth inning.

"That's my first team win as a starter", Price said with a smirk. I expect to win. So I don't think we care who we face or what the situation is.

Game 1 of the American League Championship Series was a nightmare scenario for the Boston Red Sox.

"Our approach is to keep him out of the batter's box with any opportunity to do damage", said Hinch. "I don't have to worry about facing a lineup three times through and covering a whole ballgame".

Maldonado's teammates couldn't pick him up. If the All-Star pitcher is not healthy enough to take the mound, the Red Sox could be in trouble.
