Pompeo heard recording of Khashoggi 'murder'

That's one reason some expect Washington to try to help Saudi Arabia find a way out of the political mess it faces over the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi.

But Turkish officials claimed to have discovered evidence of a crime inside the consulate where Khashoggi was last seen.

"It is out of the question for us to share this or that information with any country", he said, quoted by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

Al Hurra news channel quoted Pompeo: "I did not hear an audio tape and I did not see any transcript, and the network that announced it must withdraw this headline". And several (including Sam Altman, president of Y Combinator, and Dan Doctoroff, CEO of Alphabet unit Sidewalk Labs) have cut ties to the Saudi Arabia's Neom smart city project after being named as advisors, CNBC reports.

A Turkish forensic officer arrives at the Saudi consulate to conduct a new search over the disappearance and alleged slaying of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi, in Istanbul, early Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018.

Khashoggi, a former regime insider who became critical of Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, wrote articles for titles including the Washington Post.

The president at one point suggested that "rogue killers" could be responsible but provided no evidence to back up that assertion.

Trump so far has resisted the call for strong action against Saudi Arabia.

In Istanbul, a leaked surveillance photo showed a man who has been a member of the crown prince's entourage during trips overseas walking into the Saudi Consulate just before Khashoggi vanished there - timing that drew the kingdom's heir-apparent closer to the columnist's apparent demise.

President Donald Trump is facing increased pressure from Congress over his handling of Khashoggi's disappearance, exposing a widening rift between the White House and Capitol Hill over the US relationship with Saudi Arabia. He disappeared after entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2, and Turkish officials have accused the Saudis of brutally killing Khashoggi there.

But while withholding judgment on the case, Trump and Pompeo in recent days have stressed the depth of US-Saudi cooperation in financial and counterterrorism matters stretching back for nearly a century. "They're an important strategic ally of the United States, and we need to be mindful of that", he said.

"The UK remains very concerned about Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance", a British government spokesperson said in a statement, insisting that the Saudis abide by their pledge to carry out a full and transparent investigation.

Pro-government media in Turkey have published claims - said to come from sources working on the case - that detail how Mr Khashoggi was allegedly beaten, had his fingers cut off and was dismembered by a medical expert.
