Stable premiums, options as health law sign-ups begin

They highlighted some of the available resources to help Mainers decide which plan is best for them.

Governor Phil Murphy this week announced the launch of Get Covered New Jersey, a state public awareness campaign to promote the Affordable Care Act's 2019 open enrollment period, which runs from November 1 through December 15.

North Carolinians who are already enrolled in a HealthCare.gov plan will automatically get re-enrolled in 2019 coverage, but navigators are urging consumers to check back in to see if a more suitable plan is available.

Such easing of prices, coming on the heels of a year of increases of more than 50 percent, has added more stability to the exchanges.

Short-term, limited duration options may offer lower premiums, but they won't cover as much.

"The plans and coverage are really comparable to a year ago", says Kori Hattemer, the director of financial programs at Foundation Communities.

"A lot of people go on Healthcare.gov and look at the plan prices and think that it's too expensive, or someone in their family or in their social circle will say that the plans aren't affordable", says Hattemer.

Consumers can choose a plan from four "metallic" tiers ranging from bronze to platinum on the exchange. You can also stop by the Milwaukee Health Department's Keenan, north side or south side health centers for help.

This is the first enrollment period after federal officials removed the tax penalty for people who fail to purchase health insurance, a former requirement under the Affordable Care Act.

"When you're budgeting, you have to take into account all the costs", said Jodi Ray, director of Florida Covering Kids and Families at USF and director of Florida's navigator grant.

President Trump's administration cut the open enrollment period in half, from three months in 2016 to six weeks, in 2017 and 2018.

The hospital will have informational panel cards throughout the facility, in its clinics and around the community that include a phone number to call to set up an appointment. These plans will have different coverage and payment options. "We're making sure people know financial help is available".

Department of Health (DOH) Commissioner Shereef Elnahal is asking all medical and behavioral healthcare providers in the state to encourage and help their patients and clients get the coverage that can save their lives. But he says with the help of a local insurance agent, consumers who do not receive subsidies through the ACA may have other more affordable options. It's become a central issue in the campaign, with Republicans saying Eastman's support for "Medicare for all" is too extreme and costly for taxpayers while Democrats argue Bacon has voted to strip benefits from the Affordable Care Act. U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), who joined Murphy's team for Tuesday's event, stressed that these attacks will continue.

Enrollment is also underway for a non-insurance health benefit plan sponsored by the Iowa Farm Bureau, a non-profit agricultural organization. Thanks to a Trumpian regulatory change, these bare-bones plans can now last all year, allowing insurers to sell (potentially) useless crap under the aegis of the ACA. Federal rules forbid employer health plans from discriminating against those with pre-existing conditions prior to the federal overhaul.

No one offering ACA-compliant health care coverage will ask you if you have a preexisting condition.
