The advert's narrative is summed up at the end, with the slogan "Some gifts are more than just a gift".
Sir Elton John appears in this year's advert - "The Boy and the Piano" - in which he looks back at his life and career while performing "Your Song".
Scenes show him on private jets and playing stadium shows but the viewer is reminded that he started playing in pubs, and even in his school recital.
"The ad is absolutely fantastic and I've truly loved every minute of being a part of it".
Beyond the via, John Lewis says this will be its "most ambitious" experiential Christmas campaign to-date, with customers able to experience the ad themselves in its Oxford Street store.
It added that Sir Elton had requested that a portion of his fee be donated to the Elton John Charitable Trust when he was first approached to be involved.
The move comes ahead of John Lewis' much-anticipated Christmas campaign, which is reported to contain a starring role for the musician.More news: Contradicting himself, Trump denies knowing acting A.G. Matt Whitaker
The TV ad was shared by staff before it officially airs on TV tonight at 9.15pm on ITV.
However, the decision to use Sir Elton may have split opinion more than usual, with some on Twitter questioning if the advert was just a promo for the singer.
"The John Lewis Christmas campaign is an iconic part of Christmas now and has had so many warm memories and associations for us, with all of our Christmases, so to be asked to be part of that was a huge honour".
Another complained that the song had been used before, referencing the 2010 creation.
Every year, the entirety of the United Kingdom waits for the new advert to be released and this year, the company have gone all in with an Elton John inspired video.
The little boy is later revealed to be Elton John. Fans will have to settle for his vintage tour t-shirts.
