Mass Shooting in Chicago Hospital Leaves 3 Dead Including a Police Officer

A friend of the woman tried to intervene before the shooter lifted up his shirt to reveal a gun. Police were searching for the gunman and said he should be considered armed and risky. He then entered the hospital and fired the shots that killed a pharmaceutical assistant and a police officer. According to police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, the woman was shot as she stepped from an elevator.

Less had just graduated from Purdue University. He joined the force in February 2017 and recently completed probationary training, becoming a full-fledged officer, Johnson said.

Workers at the Chicago hospital where a gunman fatally shot his ex-fiancée and two others had gone through their first active-shooter drill only a few weeks ago.

Eyewitnesses told reporters the shooting began in the parking lot before moving into a clinic area inside the hospital. Among the deceased, one is believed to be the gunman's former fiance.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson said there was an argument in the auto park between Lopez and Dr O'Neal at around 3.30pm yesterday.

In Denver, another shooting left one person dead and four wounded on Monday.

The gunman, Juan Lopez, 32, also died, police said. The gunman fatally shot a female hospital employee in what was referred to as a "domestic dispute". Mercy Hospital tweeted later that the incident was over and that all patients were safe.

The gunman then fired shots at responding police officers while they were still in their squad auto.

"Then nearly immediately, an officer was already coming in an SUV and he exchanged fire at them and then reloaded and shot the person on the ground again and then he made his way into the hospital and more shots were fired", another witness recalled.

James Gray said he was inside Mercy Hospital when the shooting unfolded. "They were heroes because we just don't know how much damage (the shooter) was prepared to do".

The suspect was shot in the chest before he shot himself, according to police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. He then fired multiple shots at officers who arrived before they could exit their squad auto.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel commented on the loss of Officer Jimenez and the others killed in the hospital shooting.
