India bus crash: Mandya, Karnataka smash 'leaves 25 passengers dead'

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister, G Parameshwara on Saturday gave updates on the accident that took place in Karnataka's Mandya.

Among the confirmed dead are a woman and a small child. The majority of deaths were caused by drowning as the bus sank in the canal, trapping the passengers. "Prima facie, the accident seems to have occurred due to the driver's negligence", a police officer from the office of Mandya Superintendent of Police (SP) told IANS.

A group of youth, who were near the accident spot, jumped into the canal to rescue the victims, but could not pull out those stuck inside the bus.

Manjunath, a resident, said that they alerted the local authorities who stopped the water into the canal.

Local news reports say most of the victims are believed to be school children.

A case has been registered against the driver, police said.

"Divers retrieved the bodies of 25 passengers from the bus before it was fished out of the canal". "The bus skidded off the road this afternoon and plunged into a canal here". Latest reports said four kids were among those killed.

Girish, a carpenter who was rescued, said he survived as he was sitting next to a window and could swim safety.

Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy visited the site of the accident and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased.

The Congress chief also condoled the deaths and preyed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
