Winter storm prompts hundreds of flight cancellations at O’Hare, Midway

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for Genesee, Huron, Lapeer, Saginaw, Sanilac, Shiawassee and Tuscola counties through 3 p.m. Monday. Roads across the southern portion of Iowa were snow-covered, and strong winds created risky travel conditions, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.

With up to a foot of snow expected to fall in the northwestern part of the city and suburbs, the storm could break a 123-year-old record for biggest snowstorm in Chicago in November. In Lincoln, 3 inches was recorded. "Driving through blizzard conditions is no way to end the holiday weekend", the weather service tweeted Sunday morning.

Tom Skilling is tracking the storm as it crosses through Chicagoland.

The region is under a blizzard warning through Monday morning, and about a foot of snow was possible in some areas, Donofrio said. Expect snow to start in the morning hours in the southern sections tomorrow.

Because of the poor weather conditions in Kansas City, RideKC announced it was suspending service at 6 p.m. The previous record was 6.6 inches in 1995, the weather service said. Winds will ramp up, temperatures will drop, and school delays/cancellations are likely along with scattered power outages. Since Michigan is in the colder air north/west of this system, it places much of our area in a primary location for a sizeable snow event. In a statement, the Illinois State Police echoed this sentiment, saying drivers should only take to the roads if it is "absolutely necessary". Officials say additional road closures are likely during the storm.

As of 10:30 a.m. Sunday, over 250 flights have been canceled at O'Hare International Airport. The National Weather Service office in Kansas City advised people who had family still in town to keep them there another day due to the risky conditions. The average delay time is around 15 minutes.

The winter storm was moving at a fast pace, so Chicago was bracing for 8 inches to 12 inches of snow and high winds even as conditions were beginning to improve in the Plains on Sunday evening, WBBM reported.

Ahead of Saturday night, the Kansas Highway Patrol says it's a good idea to check your vehicle to make sure everything works before you begin traveling.
