According to TMZ, Oprah's niece, Alisha Hayes, posted that Vernita - who gave birth to Oprah in 1953 - died over the holiday, however her media mogul daughter has yet to publicly comment. She described having to sleep on her mother's porch when she first arrived in Milwaukee because her mother's roommate took issue with Winfrey's skin complexion.

Lee later appeared on Winfrey's talk show in 1990, where her personal stylist gave her a makeover.

Meanwhile, Lee's son Jeffrey Lee passed away in 1989, while her third daughter, Patricia Lee Lloyd, died in 2003.

In a 2007 interview with Milwaukee TV station TMJ4, Lee recalled her relationship with her daughter.

Memorial donations can be made in Vernita's name to Feeding America.

Oprah eventually went to live with her mother, and although it took a while for them to fix their tumultuous relationship, they became close over the last few years.

Vernita Lee worked as a housekeeper for a good portion of her life.

After sharing two Instagram videos on Thanksgiving, Winfrey had stayed quiet on social media.

"I walked into that space feeling completely alone and abandoned". "I don't remember ever shedding a tear about it because I knew that God was my father, Jesus was my brother, and they were with me".

Oprah Winfrey's mother has died. "To my mother, I say, 'You can let this shame go'". Sources said that "even though she didn't have the best relationship with Vernita, her passing was really devastating for her".
