Although Trump will attend Bush's service, he is not among the eulogists, marking the first time since Lyndon Johnson's death in 1973 that a sitting president has not been tapped to eulogize a late president.

He said Bush was the first president he ever voted for and was "the first president to teach me and many of us that in a democracy sometimes you fall short", and how you handle that, "is just as important as how you win".

"Year after year we got more and more casual and the fun novelty sock became an opportunity of expression", Cohen said.

The federal government will also be closed Wednesday. Flags on public buildings are flying at half-staff for 30 days.

The Postal Service will suspend regular mail delivery and retail service December 5.

While regular mail service will come to a halt, officials say there will still be some limited package delivery service to keep from disrupting holiday operations.

"President Bush worked selflessly throughout his long life to bring about a world of justice and lasting peace", he wrote.

Trump has declared Wednesday a national day of mourning.

Remembrances to George and Barbara Bush sprang up in the Houston neighbourhood where they made their home, at a memorial to President Bush at a city park and at the airport named in his honour. He'll be seated in the front row alongside former presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter.

Houston will host a public tribute to Bush on Monday night.

The Queen would usually have turned out for the event - but instead she has handed the role to her son.

Bush's lifetime of service began in the Navy during World War II and ended with four years as president.

After a speech from Vice President Mike Pence, Bush will lie in state in the US Capitol from Monday evening until Wednesday morning, under the watchful gaze of an around-the-clock honor guard.

Hours after the emotional ceremony, it was announced that President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump would pay their respects at the Rotunda.

Eulogies will be offered by George W Bush, former Wyoming senator Alan Simpson, former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney and historian Jon Meacham, a Bush family spokespeople said.

The arrival ceremony at Texas A&M University will be at 2:45 p.m. MT and will be followed by another ceremony and the interment at 3:15 p.m. MT at the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum.

People lined up before dawn to pay respects to the 41st president, a son and father of privilege now celebrated by everyday citizens for his common courtesies and depth of experience.

Others at the ceremony included all of the members of the Supreme Court except Ruth Bader Ginsburg, former vice presidents Dick Cheney and Dan Quayle, and former secretaries of state James Baker and Colin Powell. "But I came along just as the old world of Ivy League white men running everything was breaking up".

On Thursday, a private funeral service with about 1,200 invited guests will be held at the church starting at 10 a.m. CST. "I wasn't the biggest fan of his presidency, but all in all he was a good, honest guy doing a really hard job as best he could". "So we're together all the time..."

Bush died peacefully Friday at age 94, at his home in Houston, a passing that led Americans to reflect on his life of duty and service to country as a leader of the so-called "Greatest Generation".

Shortly before leaving the service, he married his 19-year-old sweetheart, Barbara Pierce, and forged a 73-year union that was the longest presidential marriage in US history until her death. The family members then climbed the stairs into the plane.

Spent a wonderful day at College Station back in 2011.
