Manmohan Singh's biopic riveting: BJP; Cong wants screening before release

On Thursday, the Maharashtra Youth Congress released a statement, demanding a pre-release screening of the film.

The clarification came after a section of media reported that the film, based on the book of the same name by Mr. Singh's former media advisor Sanjaya Baru, has been banned in the State.

Actor Anupam Kher, who plays the role of Manmohan Singh in the film "Accidental Prime Minister", on Friday asked why the Congress is protesting against the movie now when the book, on which it is based, has been in the makrket since 2014. Was Dr Singh just a regent who was holding on to the PM's chair till the time heir was ready?

The trailer of the movie shows Anupam Kher getting into the shoes of Singh, perfectly resembling the latter's appearance and body language.

While the film's messaging may well have overt political overtones - perhaps that is the reason the BJP's official handle tweeted the trailer - the Youth Congress's stand flies in the face of attempts by Congress leaders nationally to target the saffron party and parivar for its intolerance towards different points of view.

Calling it a propaganda film, the Congress accused the BJP of trying to capitalise on it at a time the country is preparing for the national election next year. The veteran actor said the protests by Congress workers will only give more publicity to the film. The trailer sees both Anupam Kher and Akshaye Khanna in top form. The film is helmed by debutant Vijay Ratnakar Gutte.

"Of the 500-odd films that I have done, this has been the most hard role".

Union I&B Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore defended his party's decision to lend its official support to the film. To which, the then Congress president Sonia Gandhi says: "There is one corruption scandal after another. So I think he should scold these people and tell them they are doing wrong". Akshay Khanna is playing Sanjaya Baru, who was the media adviser of Manmohan Singh, in the film, which is scheduled to hit the theaters on 11th January 2019.
