'Black Panther' wins top honor at SAG Awards

The second round of Oscar voting, during which Academy members will determine the victor from each set of nominees, will take place between February 12 and 19; the 91st annual Academy Awards will be held on February 24 (February 25 AEDT).

The Ryan Coogler-directed film, which also nabbed an award earlier in the night for stuntwork, is the first superhero film to be nominated and win the honor, beating out "A Star Is Born", "BlacKkKlansman", "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Crazy Rich Asians". Mahershala Ali received the trophy for best supporting actor in a movie for his role as jazz pianist Don Shirley. We weren't perhaps predicting that the actors' branch would reward Black Panther to such a degree (it also scored a stunt award), but that cast certainly deserved it.

"To be young, gifted and black ― we all know what it's like to be told there is not a place for you to be featured, yet you are young, gifted and black", he said. It won best ensemble in a comedy series, as well as individual honours for Rachel Brosnahan and Tony Shalhoub, whose win was a surprise in a category that included Bill Hader ("Barry") and Michael Douglas ("The Kominsky Method").

Tom Hanks will be on hand to present his fellow actor with the SAG Life Achievement Award.

And while the results are not definitive, a win at the SAG Awards is a good indicator of how the bulk of the shared membership of the two organisations is thinking. That we could create a world that exemplified a world we wanted to see.

The SAG Awards have one thing the Oscars don't: a host. So my wish for all of us is: "Let's stay playful". When a culture is divided so sharply, actors can help - a least a little - just by doing what we do.

This year, the SAG Awards come at a key point in the race to next month's Academy Awards - just after the Oscars nominations, and well before voting for the winners begins.

"The nice part is it's fun to do it", Alda said. During the award ceremony, Owens said, "Somewhere in the middle of the road of my life I found myself in the dark wood of unemployment and debt, but instead of switching careers like a sane person I took a job at a local Trader Joe's to see if I could hang in there with my career and it's actually worked out pretty well". Other TV winners included Sandra Oh ("Killing Eve"), Darren Criss for "Assassination of Gianni Versace", Jason Bateman ("Ozark") and Patricia Arquette ("Escape at Dannemora").

On the television side, NBC's popular "This Is Us" won top honors for best drama ensemble cast for the second year in a row, while popular Amazon series "The Marvelous Mrs Maisel" swept the three prizes in the comedy categories.
