LeBron James opted for Golden State star Kevin Durant with the 1st pick of the All-Star draft on Thursday, February 7 (Friday, February 8, Philippine time). Trade rumors about Davis joining LeBron James in Los Angeles circulated right up until the deadline. Even Antetokounmpo jokingly had to ask, "Is that tampering?" after James selected Anthony Davis, the New Orleans Pelicans star who was at the centre of trade speculation linking him with the Lakers.
To which Giannis laughed and asked if that was tampering.
That would be Khris Middleton, his Bucks teammate who was selected for his first All-Star game.
James chose Golden State's Kevin Durant with the No. 1 overall pick, as he did previous year in the All-Star draft, to be one of his starters. And with all the nominees now selected for this year's game - which will be held at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C. - the draft is ready to take place Thursday night.
Prior to the draft, Antetokounmpo said that he planned on pairing Westbrook and Embiid together on his roster to help simmer their on-court rivalry, but he wasn't done there.More news: Tom Brady and Bill Belichick defy their ages with Super Bowl win
Team Giannis also includes Bucks wing Khris Middleton, Denver Nuggets post player Nikola Jokic, Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook, Brooklyn Nets guard D'Angelo Russell, Orlando Magic post player Nikola Vucevic, and Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry.
Klay Thompson, Damian Lillard, Russell Westbrook, LaMarcus Aldridge, Karl-Anthony Towns and Bradley Beal completed the squad. Thompson reportedly may have interest in signing with the Lakers this summer should matters with the Golden State Warriors go a bit wayward. "I'm going with Dirk", James said during the prerecorded draft before bursting out into laughter.
Antetokounmpo originally drafted Simmons before James proposed swapping him for Westbrook. James pulled a fast one on fans, pretending to select Nowitzki before eventually going with his longtime friend.
Antetokounmpo added Dirk Nowitzki as his special selection.
If you're having a hard time following all the comings and goings surrounding the Milwaukee Bucks over the last 48 hours or so, I don't blame you. James was the No. 1 overall selection by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2003 National Basketball Association draft and Miami took Wade with the No. 5 pick in the same draft.
