Bryce Harper should prefer Phillies over Padres from a contender standpoint

Also in the hunt for Harper have been the White Sox, Nationals and Padres.

"Any time you can add an MVP to a team, it's going to make it better", Judge said. Harper gives the Yankees some additional options in the outfield and perhaps a full-time slot for Giancarlo Stanton at DH, a position held mostly by him past year except for his 37 games in the outfield.

One issue though is that the Yankees are already stacked with outfielders, with Judge and Harper playing the same position. Harper, one of the most accomplished free agents in Major League Baseball history, still has not found a home with less than a week until pitchers and catchers report for spring training.

Considering their mini-slump as a franchise, the lack of outfield depth that Miller mentioned and the fact that the price for Harper has conceivably fallen precipitously from what his projected contract was, it makes sense that the Giants would want to get involved. While the deal will drain the Phillies farm system, the team still has deep pockets and it won't change the pursuits of Harper or Machado. Currently, New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton has the largest deal at $325 million, which he signed with the Miami Marlins. Although Yankees general manager Brian Cashman refuted such rumored interest in Harper during the Winter Meetings in December, he and other team officials did meet with Machado late that month.

"Obviously [Harper] is a great player". However, in the end, it will likely come down to who offers the most money. "But I think it's safe to assume that we're going to spring training with the team that we expect to have".

"If he comes over, he makes the team better", Gregorius said.

This past week, the hype surrounding Harper reached a tipping point when the popular video game "MLB The Show" released a tweet on Monday saying, "You'll want to keep an eye on this account tomorrow ... just saying".
