Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring wore blackface at a college costume party in 1980, he said in a statement Wednesday as the crisis sparked by racist photograph on the governor's medical yearbook page spread through the state's leadership. Fairfax would replace Northam as governor if Northam resigns.
But then rumours began circulating of another controversial photo, and this time it was Herring who was said to been in "blackface".
A Stanford fellow's allegations that Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax sexually assaulted her at the 2004 Democratic National Convention have added another layer to the scandals roiling Virginia politics.
"After Fairfax won his lieutenant governor race, Tyson followed up with a November 2017 email asking to talk to Scott about her dislike of Fairfax and then texted Scott in December 2017 to inform him that the then-lieutenant governor-elect had a "#MeToo allegation" against him. "I am a proud Democrat".
"In the days ahead, honest conversations and discussions will make it clear whether I can or should continue to serve as attorney general".
Gillibrand reportedly spoke about the issue during a Wednesday podcast taping, saying Tyson had "enormous courage" to come forward and that her allegation was "deeply disturbing and credible".
"Democrats at the top are killing the Great State of Virginia", the Republican president tweeted on Thursday.
Aides say Scott maintains that Tyson never brought up the allegations in the many years that they have known each other prior to the time period between December 2017 and January 2018.
Of course, at this writing Northam is still governor, having refused to resign despite mounting calls for him to do so from his own party.More news: Unai Emery, Arsenal manager, wants 5 new players at club this summer
"I think there should be an investigation to determine what happened,"she told reporters". This is moving way too quickly. Republican House majority leader Todd Gilbert said it would be "reckless" to comment. Northam has also denied appearing in the photo, but acknowledged donning blackface on a separate occasion.
Northam has continued to cling to power, hunkered down in the governor's mansion in Richmond, despite facing calls to resign from nearly the entire Democratic party in Virginia, and a number of prominent black public figures.
Al Franken, a Minnesota Democrat, to resign after several women accused him of sexual harassment, but he was replaced by a Democrat. Breitbart News reported that if Northam, Fairfax, and Herring were to resign, Republican Speaker of the House of Delegates Kirk Cox would become the acting governor.
Northam faced a wave of calls for his resignation from state Democrats and at least five Democratic 2020 White House contenders after the scandal broke last week when a racist photo from his 1984 medical school yearbook surfaced. While the kiss was consensual, Tyson said, what happened next was not.
But the governor did admit that he had once applied shoe polish on his face - to imitate Michael Jackson during a 1984 dance contest.
"That conduct clearly shows that, as a young man, I had a callous and inexcusable lack of awareness and insensitivity to the pain my behavior could inflict on others", he said.
First - after former Today show host Megyn Kelly's statement that she though blackface was okay when she was growing up. "He said he was very sorry", Lucas said.
Influential black lawmakers said they have not heard from Northam since the weekend.
