Injury-hit Spurs beat Dortmund, holders edge Ajax

Sancho was Dortmund's standout performer during the first half but Spurs nullified his threat after the restart as they took control of the tie. When you are in front of a team like Borussia Dortmund, you have to show respect.

Second-half goals from Son Heungmin, Jan Vertonghen and Fernando Llorente led Mauricio Pochettino's charges to an impressive victory that sets the north London side up nicely heading into the second leg on 5 March.

So many good individual displays spiced Spurs second half performance. It was an fantastic result and the players deserve massive praise but we need to think that it's going to be tough to play over there.

"We should have got the ball forward rather than played from the back for their first goal".

The goal was Son's ninth in his last 11 games against Dortmund, who are surely sick of the sight of him, as are many Premier League teams - he now has 16 goals and nine assists to his name in 32 Spurs games this season (in all competitions).

"Sonny was fantastic again".

Ferdinand then went on to say he has tracked Sancho's progress from when he was a young boy with huge talent.

Pulisic has rarely played in league play this season, but he got the start in the wings along with Jadon Sancho over Raphael Guerrero and Jacob Bruun Larsen for the Bundesliga leaders, who were missing forwards Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer and two other starters through injury or illness. "He's got the character and belief that he's one of the best players". If you win you're not a genius, if you lose it's not a disaster.

Pochettino was keen to praise 21-year-old defender Juan Foyth, who made only his second Champions League appearance and helped to deny Dortmund an away goal.

'Of course, we are happy now because it was a very good result but there is still a lot of work to do. He's so fearless, braver than the people expect.

"So I must say for these boys it's a test because they are rich before they play".

"I was a completely different type of centre-back, not with his quality".
