Tesla Model Y: Elon Musk unveils long-awaited £30,000 electric SUV

Model Y is also compatible with our current Supercharger network of more than 12,000 Superchargers in 36 countries, as well as our new V3 Superchargers which can charge at rates up to 1,000 miles per hour. Really, this was Musk's thinking.

With the Model Y, Tesla has finally unveiled the last vehicle in its "S3XY "roadmap". Musk stood before the usual throng of Tesla fans who squealed like junior high school cheerleaders at a pop concert. We'll keep you updated on the latest. When Musk first announced the Model Y would make its debut on March 14, he tweeted: "Model Y, being an SUV, is about 10% bigger than Model 3, so will cost about 10% more and have slightly less range for same battery". So while the Tesla Model 3 is already the best-selling electric vehicle and best-selling premium auto, it wasn't about to make a dent in sales of the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V. If the Model Y inspires any such passion, it hardly shows so far. and what little enthusiasm it has generated is unlikely to survive the next two years (plus the inevitable adjustment for "Elon Standard Time"). Just like the Model 3, the Model Y is equipped with a panorama glass roof. Coefficient of drag will be a remarkable 0.23, making it one of the most wind-slippery production vehicles in history. Pricing and performance (lower case p) covers a wide swath of market options, from the $40,200 (with $1200 delivery) Standard model to the $61,200 Performance (incl. del.). The cool rear doors, as seen on the Model X, were said to be very expensive to develop and hard to produce, and have reportedly been troublesome for consumers.

The Model Y has the same entry and control system that, as with the Model 3, requires no keys and is smartphone based, activating the vehicle when you're a few paces away and shutting it down and locking it as you leave. The vehicle has a range of 230 miles accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds.

The Dual Motor Performance model also gets 280 miles of range, but increases top speed to 150 and drops the 0-60mph sprint time to 3.5 seconds. It'll sticker for $52,200.

Range will vary from 230 to 300 miles.

Chief executive Elon Musk said a standard-range model priced at $39,000 would be available in 2021.

In addition to those benefits - which include affordability for the mass market, performance, and range - Elon Musk has also stated that the Model Y will offer the versatility and all benefits of a proven SUV but with the "ride" of a sports vehicle, meaning it will be "really tight on corners". He noted that none of us screamed during his mighty launch. With Americans increasingly ditching sedans for crossovers and SUVs, the newest addition to Tesla's product range will play a crucial role in driving future sales.

"We are bring sexy back, quite literally", he said.

Obviously some of this is speculative, and if I've learned anything covering Tesla it's that you can never predict what they'll do when they have their backs to the wall.

Indeed, Tesla didn't reveal a "one more thing" that many anticipated in addition to the Model Y unveiling itself, said Joseph Spak, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets. The Models S and X share just 30 percent of their parts.
