Netanyahu says Gaza campaign is not over despite ceasefire deal


President Donald Trump assured Israel on Sunday it has Washington's full support after the Jewish state led waves of retaliatory strikes in the Gaza Strip in response to Palestinian rockets.

"We have changed the rules of the game, and Hamas understands this very well", he said.

Israel said its strikes were in response to Hamas and Islamic Jihad firing some 690 rockets or mortars across the border since Saturday, with Israeli air defences intercepting more than 240 of them.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that a building used by Hamas cyber operatives was bombed on Saturday as part of a joint retaliation operation with the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) and Unit 8200 of Military Intelligence, following a failed cyber attack against Israel.

"A war that you go into and will most likely reach a conclusion and bring us back to the exact point we are in at the moment", he said.

The latest flare-up between Israel and militants in the Gaza Strip saw some of the worst fighting in years, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Israel does not acknowledge ceasefire deals with Gaza militant groups, which it considers terrorist organizations.

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., followed fellow freshman Muslim Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., in criticizing Israel for defending itself against a barrage of more than 700 rockets fired by jihadists in Gaza over the weekend.

This time, Israeli strategic affairs analysts said, both Islamic Jihad and Hamas militants appeared to believe they had some leverage to press for concessions from Israel, where independence day celebrations begin on Wednesday.
