Country House out of Preakness after horse shows signs of illness

There will be no Triple Crown in horse racing this year. Hall of Fame Trainer Bob Baffert will have two major entries which are Game Winner and Roadster. Country House is also the first Kentucky Derby victor not to race in the Preakness since Grindstone in 1996.

It has been more than 20 years since a Derby victor skipped the Preakness, with Grindstone ruled out in 1996 due to a bone chip in his knee.

Maximum Security #7, ridden by jockey Luis Saez crosses the finish line during 145th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., on May 4, 2019.

Is Country House really getting sick, or is this simply a cover for what the trainer wanted to do in the first place?

Owner Gary West said he will take his case to the courts "in the appropriate jurisdiction" and will not send his horse to the second jewel of the Triple Crown, the May 18 Preakness Stakes in Baltimore.

For a brief moment, Maximum Security and his team appeared to bask in victory before the long wait and the disqualification, which might not be the final step.

As I said earlier, though, but how much did they win?

TwinSpires reported that the largest bet on Maximum Security to win was $8,000, which would have netted $36,000. Although shorter than the Kentucky Derby, the race requires a quick turnaround.

There will be no Triple Crown victor in 2019.

Country House, War of Will, Maximum Security and Code of Honor run four-wide at the turn for home at Saturday's Kentucky Derby. He's off the training list, and if he's off the training list he's off the Preakness list.

"I think some people tried burgers they haven't had before, like elk", Banks said. "Even his running, he was up in the race, he looked like a different horse the first half of the race".

Beyond the Triple Crown, NBC Sports broadcasts some of the most important and prestigious events in all of horse racing. Keeping him out of the Preakness, though, was a no-brainer for the 65-year-old trainer. "We will monitor him and he's off the training list". In fact, you will see a lot of mighty contenders in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont which may come from these prep races that will be discussed.

The owners of the Country House restaurants in Clarendon Hills, Lisle and Geneva promoted before the race that if their namesake finished among the top three, any burger on the menu would be discounted Monday.
