Johnson goes on to justify today's choice "what would be in the best long-term interests of the New York Jets".

There were rumors the last few weeks of a rift between Gase and Maccagnan.

Mike Maccagnan guided the New York Jets through the NFL Draft and most of free agency, but will no longer serve as general manager of the club.

According to an earlier report from ESPN, VP of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger was also fired. Gase is the only head coach in the National Football League now with the general manager title, making him the 20th GM to work in the AFC East after Bill Belichick was as the Patriots head coach hired in 2000.

"This morning, I informed Mike that he was being relieved of his duties as general manager of the team, effective immediately", Jets chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson said in an official statement. "We have discussions on everything". Safety Jamal Adams and defensive lineman Leonard Williams are also recent draft picks by Maccagnan who have become building blocks for the defense.

The New York Jets are making a big chance at the top of their front office heading into the 2019 season.

Lee, 24, was a first-round pick of the Jets in 2016, when the team selected the 6-foot-1, 232-pounder 20th overall out of Ohio State.

Philadelphia Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas, who is believed to be close to Gase, could be the man to replace Maccagnan fulltime, ESPN reported. Douglas and Gase have previous working experience: Douglas was Chicago's director of college scouting in 2015, when Gase was the Bears' offensive coordinator.
